Staff was taking six-month-old tiger cub Akaasha on her daily walk around the Six Flags Discovery Kingdom when she saw Mavrick, a 14-month-old Atlantic bottlenose dolphin. The pair examined each other from all angles possible - then the dolphin blew an approving bout of bubbles towards the tiger.      “When the time came to shoot the scene, the Prop Department brought in the watermelon, which they’d painted purple.” Cameron laughs. “They didn’t want it to look like a watermelon. But I pointed out to them that when they blew it up, everybody would know it was a watermelon, because that’s what it would look like on the inside.”
Enter Gary Monak, maven of physical special effects. “I ran to the caterer, got some tapioca pudding and died it a real pukey lime-green color,” he says with a chuckle, “Then we injected that into the center of the watermelon.”
“They made a little hole where the camera wasn’t going to see, so they could pump in the tapioca,” Cameron interjects. “They had to pump it really hard, so it would squash down the melon meat and let the pudding fit in there.”
